Does your home need rewiring?

Most properties built before the 1970s will have had their wiring replaced at least once, but older installations that haven’t been touched since the 1960s or earlier are a genuine safety concern. Signs that a rewire may be needed include:

– Wiring insulation that is crumbling, discoloured, or rubber-sheathed (pre-PVC wiring)
– Frequent tripping, blown fuses, or flickering lights
– A lack of earthing on older circuits
– Sockets or switches that feel warm to the touch
– An EICR that has returned C1 or C2 codes on the wiring itself
– Planning a major extension or renovation that requires integrating new circuits into an old installation

If you’re unsure, the best starting point is an EICR — we can carry this out first and give you an honest assessment of what the installation needs.

What does a rewire involve ?

A full rewire replaces all the wiring in your home — from the consumer unit out to every socket, switch, and light fitting. This is inevitably disruptive work, involving chasing cables into walls and lifting floorboards. We take care to minimise mess and will use dust sheets and vacuum equipment throughout.

It’s worth noting that filling, plastering, and final decoration are not included in electrical work — this is standard practice across the trade. Most homeowners co-ordinate a plasterer and decorator to follow on after the electrical work is complete.

A partial rewire addresses specific circuits or areas — for example, replacing the upstairs ring main, rewiring a kitchen, or bringing a ground floor circuit up to standard following an inspection report.

**Timescales** vary significantly depending on the size and age of the property. A small terraced house might be completed in Three to four days. A larger detached property could take a week or more. We’ll give you a clear timeframe when we quote.

What happens after the work ?

Once the rewire is complete, we carry out full circuit testing and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate confirming the work complies with BS7671:2019 and applicable Building Regulations. As a NAPIT approved contractor, we notify Building Control on your behalf — you don’t need to do this separately. Your certificate will be emailed to you within 48 hours of full payment.
