Fuse Board Replacement

If your home still has an old fuse board — particularly one with rewirable fuses rather than modern circuit breakers — it’s likely overdue a replacement. Upgrading to a modern consumer unit is one of the most straightforward ways to improve the safety of your home’s electrical installation.

North Electrics carries out fuse board replacements across Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Billingham, Darlington, and the wider Teesside area. All our consumer unit installations are NAPIT approved, Part P compliant, and fully certified.

When do you need a new fuse board?

Your fuses use wire or cartridges rather than trip switches.Old-style rewirable fuse boards offer significantly less protection than modern RCD-equipped consumer units

Your board doesn’t have RCD protection.A Residual Current Device (RCD) can cut power in milliseconds if it detects a fault, protecting you from electric shock and fire. Modern consumer units incorporate RCD protection as standard.

You’re having an extension or major electrical work done.An upgrade is often required before additional circuits can be safely added.

Your board is showing signs of age.Scorch marks, burning smells, frequently tripping circuits, or a board that looks visibly old are all signs it needs attention.

Your EICR has flagged the board. If a recent inspection has returned a C1 or C2 on your consumer unit, replacement is required.

What does the work involve?

Replacing a consumer unit is typically a day job. We’ll isolate the supply, remove the old board, install the new consumer unit, reconnect all existing circuits, carry out full testing, and issue a Minor Works or Electrical Installation Certificate

You’ll receive your certificate by email within 48 hours of payment.

We use quality consumer units that comply with BS7671:2019 + A2:2024, with full RCD protection fitted as standard.

What about the supply?

If your property has a single-phase supply (the vast majority of domestic properties), a standard consumer unit replacement is a straightforward job. If there are any concerns about the incoming supply or the meter tails, we’ll let you know before we start. Any work involving the metered supply side needs to be arranged with your Distribution Network Operator — we’ll advise you if this applies.
